Broken Work

Group did some good broken swims this a.m.

Posted above pic on Facebook this a.m.

Here are a few comments from other swim coaches:

PH

Congrats to those who stepped up. Taking advantage of opportunities is key to success.

DA

Skipping bc it's "too cold"? There's only one person who's cold at these glorious training opps, and he/she is the one with the stopwatch! We have sunshine and I've even removed my gloves and jacket #1. Must be in Miami Beach!

AC

I had 7 yesterday and 8 today take advantage of having an indoor pool.

CB

I remember the days!

CW

As a swimmer who trained outside the majority of his life, I understand how temperatures, both hot and cold can effect your desire to train. But....there's countless farm boys and farm girls that are feeding livestock and working fields in this same weather for much longer hours. I doubt they got congratulations when they finished and will guess that they don't wake up to "recovery" days after a rough day on the farm. Had a kid ask if he could get out of workout early one cold winter morning a number of years ago. I asked if he wanted to crawl back into his warm bed. With a straight face he said "Naw...I've got 240 square bales to stack and if I don't get a jump on it before school, I won't be able to finish it up before afternoon workout. That's a kid who's employable, that's a kid I want voting, that's a kid who put family first and self second. We are truly privileged to coach some of the finest individuals the world has produced.

Odds-n-Ends

First, looking forward to seeing a large group of athletes tomorrow!

Take advantage of these holiday training opportunities...your opponents are!

Next, looking over the ARC guard training flyer, I think there is a typo on the March class dates (20th - 22nd).  Says those are weekend hours, but they're Tuesday - Thursday.

Might want to double check with Angela on that.  If she meant the prior Friday - Sunday (16th - 18th), that's the last weekend of spring break.  Might work out well for y'all!

If you're planning to coach the summer team, please borrow from me!  I get plenty of age group coaching materials throughout the year and much of it would help y'all out!

If you want to get it yourselves, there's a really good deal on American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) membership so you'd get the same things every month!  Let me know and I'll get you a copy of the form.

If I can remember, I'll ask if the swim team board would cover your membership for 2018.  Many club programs do this for their entire staff.

Bob Steele's book available for loan.  Steele coached the Southern Illinois University Salukis for many years (the guy's team called themselves "The Men of Steele").

So Far, So Good

Holiday training has gone well - no misses due to weather or pool issues.  Let's hope that continues!

Ice cream, cookies, pizza...good thing we're training hard and burning off those calories, right?

We accomplished plenty in just ten (10) practices:
  • Three (3) solid dry-land sessions
  • Ten swim/dive practices
  • 50,000+ yards
  • New dives
The improvement has been tremendous!  Kids are tired & sore, but they are now swimming/diving on another level.  We've been training with much greater volume & intensity* and they've responded very, very well.

We're off for the UIL-mandated five (5) days.  Any physical activity y'all can get in is a plus.  Dry-land & flexibility work, plus some water time if you can find some.

When we return to practice, here's next week's schedule:

Wednesday

Swim/Dive 8-10 a.m.
"A" Dry-land 4-4:30 p.m.
Swim/Dive 4:30-6 p.m.

Thursday

Swim/Dive 8-10 a.m.
Swim/Dive 4-6 p.m.

Friday

Swim/Dive 8-10 a.m.
"B" Dry-land 4-4:30 p.m.
Swim/Dive 4:30-6 p.m.

Saturday

Swim/Dive 8-10 a.m.

My Memory...

...failed me!

Tried to remember brutal Christmas training yardage Mansfield senior group went and was waaaaaaaay off.  It was for one (1) week and they went 90,075 yards.  About 15,000 per day for six days.

Seventeen made it.

via MAC
Over half of them went on to swim in D-I and D-II programs.

Don't they look happy?

 A little rain this afternoon:

We put in some mileage today!  12,800 for any who made both as written.

No dry-land tomorrow a.m.  Two-hour swim practice.  Please arrive early enough to get tarps pulled so we can splash at 8:00.

Something for the divers:

HS championship meet suits have been ordered.  Here's a preview (courtesy of Kiefer) of care instructions:

To reap all the benefits of a tech suit you want them fresh and crisp, new out of the box.
If you take excellent care of them they will certainly reward you.
This means rinsing and air drying them after each use.
Never put them in a dryer.
 Ever.

Academics Reminders

First, any athlete that does not pass all classes for this six week grading period will not regain eligibility in time for the high school district championships (or middle school championships) in January.

If you have not been striving for A's and B's in all your classes, it's high time you started doing so!

Next, juniors and seniors with excellent GPA's will apply for the TISCA Academic All-State.  Juniors will use their five (5) semester GPA, while seniors will use their seven (7) semester GPA.  Last year's form is here.

Use it as a guide so you understand the academic and paperwork requirements.  Once the new form is posted, I'll pass along that link.  Please make certain you get all paperwork in well before the April 1 deadline.

Finally, seniors with excellent GPA's will apply for the NISCA Academic All-America.  Seniors will use their seven (7) semester GPA.  The application portal (closed until January 1) is here.

Links to help you plan your application are working.  Please make certain you get all paperwork in before the March 31 deadline.

Notes & Schedule (Edited 11/6)

First, a quick look back:

Our line-up for the national anthem was very impressive.  Class!

Zane H turned in a lost wallet after the meet.  Integrity!

Everyone contributed to our team scores Friday.  Total Effort!

Even though we had to scratch several individual and relay swims, we had a pretty good showing Friday.

Girls finished 11th with 66 points, boys were 12th with 65 points, and we were 11th overall with 131 combined points.

If you follow college swimming, you may have noticed a couple of shocking scores out of College Station Friday.  The Aggie men defeated UT (158-142), and the Longhorn women downed A&M (151.5-148.5).  Results here

Now, a look ahead:

We'll have a slightly different dry-land routine starting this week.  Watch for a new handout.  Destroy old copies so they don't fall into enemy hands.

Keep sweating, grunting, and getting stronger.

In addition to strength, endurance, and technique; we're going to start working on our race strategies.

Divers are going to get more DD into their lists and clean up positions/entries.  Maybe also start working on a four-step approach?

Tentative plan for this week:

Monday

8th period dry-land (even day)
After school swim/dive until 5:00

Tuesday

Alvin ISD Diving Invite Entries Due
8th period dry-land (odd day)
After school swim/dive until 5:00

Wednesday

8th period dry-land (even day)
After school swim/dive until 5:00

Thursday

Divers at Alvin ISD Diving Invite
8th period watch film in B228
No after school practice

Friday

8th period dry-land (even day)
After school swim/dive until 5:00

I ran into Mrs. Bell yesterday at the H.E.B.  She's recovering from her surgery and was very, very pleased to hear that our team is growing and improving.

Divers, please have your dive sheets filled out for a six (6) dive meet (with reverse as the voluntary/required dive) Monday.  We'll need to fax those Tuesday.

If you have one (1) individual event you'd really like to swim, let me know ASAP.

Also let me know ASAP if you're unable to attend.  We'll need to send out a correction to the swim/dive release.

This Week's Schedule/Notes

Quick note about the St. John XXIII program:  They started their team in 2006 (as Pope John XXIII) with six (6) swimmers.  They're now a powerhouse program in TAPPS.  It can be done.

Friday Plan?

Forgot to discuss that today between dry-land and swim.

Here's an idear:

If I can shoot some underwater video Wednesday and/or Thursday, let's stay on campus for 8th period Friday and watch in B228.

Veterans told me how to make video play better on computer last year.  You'll have to remind me Friday.

After pep rally, you can get to the pool either in your personal vehicles or on the bus, a.k.a. Lucky 13.

Strong leg drives and arm swings, plus clean entries and great streamlines resulted in some excellent distances today.  Faith V (in another group) was the distance champ.

This Week

First, some good news.  The City of Bay City pool now has an operational diving board!

This week, divers will work on front and back approaches/take-offs and front, back, & twisting dives.  We're working toward having a six-dive list in time for the Brazosport dual on October 24.

Since we weren't able to practice Friday, please get your card money to me Tuesday.  If, for some reason, you weren't able to sell them all, I'll need unsold cards returned.

Please be ready to swim/dive by 3:30 each day this week so practices do not run long.  Be prepared daily and have a back-up plan for yourselves and teammates if something (forgot goggles, tore cap, etc.) comes up.

Facebook Post

Maggie tagged my high school teammate, Mike Smith, in the following post about her daughter's swim team start.

Mike was my high school team captain way back when I was a squirrelly freshman.

He has coached junior high swimming for many, many years.  Truly a one-of-a-kind guy.

Guess who's 7th grader decided to join the swim team this year? I picked her up from her first day of practice in tears.. she's never swam on a team before and felt there was no way she was a strong enough swimmer to stick with it.. then came the Maggie stories of how hard it was for me, and how I rarely placed in anything but last..but how swimming made me learn to push myself mentally and with the support from great coaches, like you, I always felt encouraged to keep pushing myself along. Yesterday at practice pick up...she was full of smiles and declared to me "I love it, Mom, I'm gonna do it!"

Next Week (Updated 4:54 p.m.)

Edits in red:

The pool pump motor is down, so we will not be swimming until that's back up and running.  The water looks pretty good, but that will likely change soon if they don't restore circulation.

Let's keep our fingers crossed for a SCAR* pool this year!

Here's our tentative plan for next week:

Tuesday - Teacher Work Day

Wednesday - 8th period athletics report to gym, short athlete meeting in Blackcat Room at 3:00 p.m.

Thursday - 8th period athletics report to gym, parent meeting in BCHS Cafeteria at 6:00 p.m.

Friday - 8th period athletics report to gym

Saturday - Pool work day** (8:00 a.m. - noon), pizza lunch

Garrett Weber-Gale on Nutrition (Originally posted on 9/21/15)

Former Longhorn Garrett Weber-Gale is one of the smartest, hardest working athletes out there.  Bobby was fortunate to be Garrett's "Locker Buddy" in his freshman year at UT.  He's a great teacher and motivator!

Unfortunately, a battle with high blood pressure almost ended GWG's swimming career...then he got into eating healthier.

Using only the best foods to "fuel" him, Weber-Gale not only qualified for the 2008 US Olympic team, he was a huge part of one of the greatest relays in our nation's history:

Here's Series 1 of GWG's nutrition videos:

p.s.  Bobby was fortunate to be Garrett's "locker buddy" during his freshman year at UT.  GWG was a great influence on the entire team...especially that Button kid...
