We must do better!

How?

Things on our #TBW handout, like taking care of academics before it's too late and, of course:

Be where you're supposed to be, when you're supposed
to be there, doing what you're supposed to be doing!

Notes & Reminders

Our plan to use the Homeroom Enrichment Period for a Swim Video Review Session was nixed, so I instead created a Backgammon Session.  When I saw sport after sport listed with their own sessions, I immediately asked why ours had not been allowed!  OOPS!  Their mistake!  We will be allowed to have our Swim Enrichment Session in the next go-round.

Since our athletes' dry-land clothes are at the pool now, we're going to issue another set this week to keep in athletic lockers on campus.  Whether we're at the pool or on campus during 8th period, the expectation is that all will suit out and participate.  This is how athletes will be graded for the class.

Practice attendance is important!  Check  handbooks and note that 90% practice attendance is one requirement for lettering.

We invited several teams to join us Wednesday for a joint practice and early season Time Trials.  Parents who volunteered to help out with Home Meet Operations can support us by running stopwatches and recording times for the event.

This will not be a "take off early from work & rush to the pool" type event, but we would appreciate any help y'all can provide.

Saturday, we used a combination of parents and athletes to time and that's standard procedure for an exhibition-type meet like Time Trials.

When we put this practice/TT together last spring, it was met with enthusiasm...in recent days, we've gotten word from a few that they won't be attending.  Haven't heard from the others:

Brazosport (out)
Columbia (?)
El Campo (out)
Palacios (out)
Sweeny (?)
Van Vleck (maybe)
Wharton (?)

StrokeMax Podcast with Norbert Ágh

This gentleman truly is a globetrotter!

He was in the states recently at The World Games in Birmingham Alabama.  Ágh works with the Hungarian National Lifesaving team.  They took home two relay golds in men's competition, along with a pair of silvers for the women.

We've been trying to pin Norbie down to visit and he found a few minutes for us last week.

Here's our episode with Hungarian Olympian Norbert Ágh:

We love to throw out terms like "feel for the water" and "early vertical forearm" in our sport.

Norbie's StrokeMax anti-paddles require swimmers to use those forearms and enhance their feel for the water.

You asked for it...

...okay, so you didn't ask for it, but here it is anyway.

DJA has our recent Swim Talk A2B podcast episodes up on YouTube.

These, and all previous episodes of Swim Talk A2B are available via Spotify and YouTube.

We talked to writer/swimmer Mike Stott about getting publicity for your swim program:

Dana & I visited with our buddy Patrick Henry so he could share what he learned in his two interim coaching jobs at MAC and New Trier.

Great stuff for coaches taking the reins in an already established program.  So much to talk about, we had to break it into two parts.

Part B:

Most recently, VP of Sales for American Shield Roofing and Construction's Jon Lamson took the time to chat about the Victoria Advocate's Varsity Cup.

American Shield is a major sponsor of the event that recognizes local high school athletes and coaches for their efforts beyond the court, field, and pool:

Quote of the Week

If you make it in the NBA, for your entire life up to that point,
you were probably the best player on every team you were on.

When you get to the NBA, one of the things they tell you coming
in is that 80% of the league is role players.  Essentially they
tell you, you're no longer going to be the star of your team.

Most of us are not going to be the star ever again.  That's
a hard pill to swallow.  Honestly, the reason a lot of guys
don't make it in the NBA is they can't swallow that pill,
they can't accept it, they can't take a back seat,
they're unwilling to take on a "lesser" role.

June Update

Summer Training

Glory V. is running the Aquacat Advanced Group practices Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 5 to 7.  Several of our Blackcats/Panthers are putting in the work.  Join them!

sportsYou

Everyone (athletes & parents/guardians) should move to the new sportYou for the upcoming 2022-23 school year.  Reminder is on the bulletin board.  Please spread the word!

Access Code for both BCHS & BCJH swimmers/divers:

MHN4-MWSN

Point System

We're doing a point system this time around, so please keep track of the days you put in.  If you helped with storing equipment, peer coaching a clinic, pool work days, restringing lane ropes, etc. - write it down.  If you swim in one of our camps/clinics, those count as well.  Once school starts, I'll have more details.

Camps/Clinics

We hope to run a small "open" camp in late July or early August.  We'll need experienced helpers!

We may also have a preseason mini-camp for both high school and junior high at the start of school.

Meet Schedules Preview

Schedules are shaping up.  We're scheduled to host a joint practice/time trial session on Wednesday, September 28.  We've invited several area schools to join us.  Since it's what you might call a "scrimmage", it won't count as a meet but we will be able to get some early season times into the computer.
